Tourism key driver in Romblon’s recovery from pandemic

ODIONGAN, Romblon (PIA) -- The province of Romblon has seen significant economic recovery, with the tourism sector playing a crucial role in the rebound.

After facing challenges in the aftermath of the pandemic, Romblon has demonstrated resilience, particularly with tourism emerging as a key driver in revitalizing the local economy.

The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Romblon recorded a notable growth of 9.8 percent in 2022, surpassing the Php 26.44 billion recorded in 2021, indicating the province's commitment to recovery and growth. This positive trend is attributed to the steady increase in vital sectors such as hospitality, transportation, and construction.

During a recent press conference, Jonny Solis, chief statistical specialist of Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Romblon, underscored the tourism sector's substantial contribution to 2022’s economic growth.

He noted that accommodation and food services activities in the province recorded a 35.2 percent growth rate in 2022, transportation and storage at 16.3 percent, and construction at 15.2 percent growth rate.

Solis said that the increase in the overall value of goods and services produced, reaching PHP 29.03 billion, not only reflects the rebound but also solidifies Romblon's position as the second-highest in GDP growth among the five provinces in the region.

Among major industries, Romblon’s economy was driven by Services, which accounted for more than half of the province’s total economic output with an annual average share of 60.1 percent. It was followed by Industry with 22.3 percent share, and Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing (AFF) at 17.6 percent share.

This resurgence is indicative of the collaborative efforts of Romblon's tourism stakeholders, businesses, and the local community in promoting the province as an appealing destination. (PJF/PIA Mimaropa - Romblon)
