DOLE makes sure workers’ rights are protected in Antique

SAN JOSE Antique (PIA) -- The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) assured the labor sector that it is employing measures to protect workers' rights to maintain industrial peace.

DOLE Antique senior labor and employment officer Benjie M. Requintina shared some interventions they have been doing to protect the rights of workers such as the Single-Entry Approach (SENA) for workers with concerns with their employers.

In 2023, DOLE was able to respond to 19 complaints from several employees through SENA.

It was able to settle these cases earning a monetary award of P768,542.68 for 41 workers who sought the assistance of the provincial field office.

Requintina, who was a resource person in a radio program produced by the Philippine Information Agency-Antique, reported the Technical and Advisory Visit (TAV) to 549 micro establishments, with less than 5 workers, who then attended the mentoring session so they could comply with the provisions of Republic Act 11058 or the Occupational Safety and Health Standards Law.

DOLE lauded the cooperation and support of these micro establishments that have designated safety and first aid

officers as a requirement under the law, noting that the labor department is willing to link them with agencies that offer training for free.

He also cited the Philippine National Red Cross for conducting occupational safety and basic first aid courses, equipping the designated safety and first aid officers with knowledge and skills that could be applied in their respective workplaces.

Aside from TAV, DOLE also conducted regular inspections/visits to various establishments, with more than 5 workers, in Antique to check on their compliance with labor laws such as RA 11058, implementation of minimum wage law, payment of 13th month-pay, among others.

The DOLE has inspected a total of 70 establishments.

The Human Resource Network (HRN) is also considered an important partner of DOLE in ensuring the implementation of Labor Laws.

Notably, the organization was given a push last year to organize the network and facilitate regular learning sessions with them.

Requintina said that by empowering the HRN, they will be equipped with the

latest issuances from DOLE which they can impart to the employees.

He added that when the employees are well-informed, conflicts between employees and employers can be averted, thus industrial peace can be attained, which could eventually draw more investors to the province.

Special Employment of Students (SPES) is also one of the major accomplishments of DOLE last year having employed a total of 590 out of the 295 targeted students assigned to partner local government units and private institutions. Around 40 percent of their salaries were paid by the DOLE and 60 percent by the partner institutions.

With the job fairs and employment facilitation conducted last year, Requintina noted the strong support of the Public Employment Services Office (PESO) in facilitating the event across different local government units, private institutions, and schools.

The provincial PESO has the greatest number of job fairs conducted, followed by the main campus of the University of Antique (UA) in Sibalom, then the UA-Tibiao Campus, and other LGUs.

To Requintina, these job fairs have helped Antiqueños a lot, especially the new graduates to find jobs.
