Iloilo City village lauds ‘KALINISAN’ program, promotes community sanitation, waste segregation

ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- Barangay officials and residents of Veterans Village, here, joined the call for a healthy and safe environment for all with the recent launching of the "Kalinga at Inisyatiba para sa Malinis na Bayan Program" or KALINISAN sa Bagong Pilipinas Program.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., in a video message, underscored the role of the barangays in advancing change through their best practices as the basic unit of society.

“Simulan po natin sa kaayusan at kalinisan. Filipinos do not deserve dirty, dingy, or dark communities. Kaya kumilos tayo upang gawing maaliwalas at malinis ang ating kapaligiran. Dapat walang lugar, ni puwang, ang dumi, dugyot, at dilim sa ating pamayanan,” the President said.

In Western Visayas, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Region 6 led the conduct of the program as part of the nationwide activity on Saturday, January 6, in collaboration with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), and Barangay Veterans Village in this City.

In his message, DILG 6 Regional Director Juan Jovian Ingeniero emphasized cooperation and unity among members of the community in maintaining cleanliness, embodying the brand of leadership of the current administration.

“Ang solusyon talaga lagi sa lahat ng programa kaya nagtatagumpay ay dahil sama-sama po lahat. Hindi lang po ng gobyerno, pati ang komunidad, ang barangay, ang SK, at mga tao… wala pong hindi maso-solusyonan na problema,” Ingeniero stressed.

The DILG 6 chief also pointed out the primary benefit of promoting the Bayanihan spirit in keeping communities clean and safe begetting holistic public safety and a healthy environment.

Meanwhile, Veterans Village Punong Barangay lawyer Queenie Mae David hoped that the program would establish a habit for the constituents of her barangay, emphasizing their shared responsibility in keeping their community and their home clean and safe.

indi lang kon may bisita, indi lang kon may bayad, or may TUPAD or may KALAHI, kundi sa adlaw-adlaw nga panggawi naton (I hope this is the start to establish a habit. The habit of cleaning, not only in times when we will have visitor, when there is pay, or with TUPAD or KALAHI programs, but in our everyday life),” she noted.

In Brgy. Veterans Village alone, a total of 146 local officials and community volunteers participated and were able to collect a total of 154 kilograms of waste.

Other provinces and highly urbanized cities in the region participated in the program launching through their respective DILG offices with the chosen showcase barangays to include DILG Aklan in Brgy. Tinigaw, Kalibo; DILG Antique in Brgy. 8, San Jose de Buenavista; DILG Capiz in Brgy. Banica, Roxas City; DILG Guimaras in Brgy. San Isidro, Buenavista; DILG Iloilo Province in Brgy. Poblacion, Leganes; DILG Negros Occidental in Brgy. Zone 12-A, Talisay City; and DILG Bacolod City in Brgy. Singcang-Airport.

The launching of the KALINISAN sa Bagong Pilipinas Program, which is also in time with the celebration of the annual Community Development Day, is pursuant to President Marcos’ Memorandum Circular No. 41 and DILG Memorandum Circular No. 2024-001, aligning with the administration's Bagong Pilipinas campaign in fostering the country's commitment towards a deep and fundamental transformation in all sectors of society.
