OFW noon, teacher na ngayon: DMW grant helps former overseas workers start new careers

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro (PIA) -- The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) regional office in Mimaropa through the National Reintegration Center for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs)-MIMAROPA awarded financial grants to 15 former Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who have transitioned into the profession of teaching in Oriental Mindoro. 

The awarding took place recently at the Office of Congressman Arnan C. Panaligan in Calapan City.

Each OFW integree received P20,000 under DMW’s “Sa Pinas, Ikaw ang Ma’am at Sir” (SPIMS) program which was rolled out in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd).

The 15 OFWs who are all licensed teachers (LET) passers found their calling in the academe after return to the Philippines for good. The financial grants provided by DMW are aimed at supporting these former OFWs adjust to their “new” life in the Philippines.

DMW OIC Regional Director Jonathan A. Gerodias expressed the government’s commitment to recognize and support the valuable contributions of former OFWs who choose to redirect their careers towards education.

He stated that the awarding of said grants are a form of giving back and thanking the former OFWs for their sacrifices not only for their families but also to the country.

Also present in the activity is DWM Oriental Mindoro OIC provincial head Bip Dela Cruz who is in charge of facilitating and accommodating the beneficiaries.

Mindoro Rep. Arnan C. Panaligan expressed his support to the SPIMS programs as well as other projects by the Department of Migrant Workers and vowed to become an active partner of the agency in improving the lives of the OFWs returning to their home province. (JJGS/PIA MIMAROPA - Oriental Mindoro)
