NPA lost an 'infamous' leader in Sorsogon clash--Army

PILI, Camarines Sur (PIA) -- A high-ranking official of the New People’s Army (NPA) was killed in an encounter with the 31st Infantry Battalion (31IB) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Gubat, Sorsogon, Sunday, January 14.

Baltazar Hapa, described as Guerrilla Front 1, Sub-regional Committee 3 commanding officer, was killed during the 25-minute firefight with the government troops that bega at 6 p.m. in Barangay Togawe, Gubat, Sorsogon.

Additionally, an M4 rifle, magazines, and an improvised explosive device were found in the encounter site.

Hapa, also known as "Patrick" was involved in various cases of unrest in Sorsogon that affected the peace situation in the province. His infamous and rampant illegal activities in Sorsogon also caused fear and anxiety among the residents.

31IB troops and policemen chance upon Hapa’s group while patrolling the vicinity where the escaping NPA might have traversed following two previous clashes in Sorsogon on Sunday, January 14.

Earlier this month, the Philippine Army encountered armed groups in the hinterlands of Barangay Sangat in Gubat, Sorsogon.

Joint Task Force Bicolandia and 9th Infantry ‘SPEAR’ Division (9ID) Commander Major General Adonis Bajao reiterated his call to the New People’s Army not to waste the opportunity to have a fresh start with their family and abandon armed struggle.
