Veggie farmers net P1.4M sales from DA's 'Buying Rescue' program

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan (PIA) -- With implementation of the 'Buying Rescue' program as an intervention of the Department of Agriculture (DA) Region 2 to the oversupply and production losses issues, vegetable farmers in Cagayan Valley were able to net 1.4 million in total sales of their products from January 6 to January 26, 2024 alone.

DA started buying vegetable produce of farmers late last year. They deliver the vegetable products in Metro Manila markets and in other regions in Luzon.

Regional Executive Director Rose Mary Aquino expressed her gratitude to the support of the community, the local government units, institutional buyers, and local buyers in their food rescue mission.

Aside from food rescue mission, they also connect and link the vegetable farmers to cooperatives, associations and food processors to for bulk purchase of their products.

The farmer cooperatives and associations contributed about P1.1 million of the sales or about 38.9 kilograms, followed by the Agribusiness and Marketing Division of DA 2 with 9,806 kilograms, and about 1,000 kilograms by other buyers.

Aquino said this move is DA's way of addressing over supply at the Nueva Vizcaya Agricultural Terminal following the dialogue with Manager Gilbert Cumila which resulted to the creation of the “Buying Rescue Program”.

Aquino immediately mobilized DA centers, FCAs and likewise sought the help of the local government units  to come into rescue.

Early January, there was a call from farmers to help them dispose their products after their co-famers in Benguet and Ifugao had their bulk harvest, too, thus gave birth to the rescue program of the department. (GVB/PIA Region 2 with reports from Ferdiand Cortez of DA)
