DA distributes P14M cash aid to nearly 3,000 rice farmers in Capiz

ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) -- The Department of Agriculture has distributed a total of P14,960,000 cash to support  2,992 farmers from the 21 barangays of Sigma town in Capiz.

During the event, the DA also conducted a Farmers ID Intervention Monitoring Distribution where each farmer received P5,000.00 financial support through the DA’s Rice Farmer Financial Assistance (RFFA) program.

One of the beneficiaries, Wilbert Fulgencio from Barangay Mangoso, said that it was his second time receiving financial assistance from the DA.

Fulgencio shared that their family owned a half a hectare farmland and he will again use the money to buy fertilizers and other farm inputs.

“[Gamiton ko ini] pangbakal sang galastuhon sa amon nga ulumhan kay kamahal na yanda ang presyo sang abuno kag bulong sang palay, hindi man pwede nga mag-uma ka nga wala ka abuno kag bulong (I will use this to purchase what is needed for our rice field because the fertilizer and chemicals are already expensive and it is impossible not to use them in farming),” Fulgencio added.

Ramon Reyes, 81, said that he has been a farmer most of his life and through this livelihood, he was able to support his seven children.

Aside from receiving the RFFA for three years, Reyes stated that he is also one of the beneficiaries of rice seeds and fertilizers from the Municipal Agriculture Office.

Reyes noted that he will use the money for his worker’s compensation and to buy additional farm inputs.

“Pangbakal ko man ini sang binhi kag abuno (I will also use this to buy seeds and fertilizer),” Reyes said, adding that he is thankful to DA for always helping farmers like him.

The municipal agriculturist and information officer Thomas Lagulay said they are grateful for the DA's assistance to the 2,992 Sigmahanon farmers.

“Ang pondo sang banwa hindi ina makasarang nga makahatag sa amo ni ka damo nga mga benepisyaryo. Gapasalamat gid kami sa ayuda halin sa national government nga makabulig gid daku sa aton mga gagmay nga mga mangunguma sang banwa (Relying only on the municipal fund, it cannot provide this much to the beneficiaries. We are thankful to the national government because this [support] will greatly help the small farmers of Sigma),” Lagulay added.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., during his visit to Roxas City, said that about 10,000 rice farmers in the province would receive financial support from the DA in 2023 as part of the RFFA program.

According to the DA, many more farmers are anticipated to withdraw their share of the P12 billion RFFA program this year.

Tens of thousands of rice farmers have reportedly benefited from the P5,000.00 unconditional financial aid pledged by the government. (AGP/PLF/PIA Capiz)
