Fluvial, foot processions for Sto. Niño mark start of Dinagyang weekend

ILOILO CITY (PIA) – Thousands of devotees expressed their adoration to Senior Sto. Niño Friday, January 26, in the fluvial and solemn foot processions that signaled the kick-off of the 2024 Dinagyang Festival weekend.

The fluvial procession is one of the most symbolic traditions of Dinagyang.

A Philippine Coast Guard's 4404 BRP Capones carried the replica of the original image of Santo Niño de Cebu from Fort San Pedro to Muelle Loney Street in the afternoon fluvial procession. The other replicas of the image of Senior Santo Niño aboard various sea crafts added a solemnity atmosphere.

The fluvial procession was continued on foot by thousands of devotees from Muelle Loney street winding through Montinola, Iznart, JM Basa and Zamora Streets towards the San Jose Church in front of Plaza Libertad for the mass and blessing of the Santo Niño images and devotees.

Loren Baroy, a 57 years - old devotee from Rizal Estanzuala, Tanza, Iloilo, said that she and her family have been joining the fluvial and foot procession even before the pandemic.

She added that her family has been doing this devotion for her family and the guidance in the education of her children.

The Dinagyang ILOmination Streetdance Competition and Floats Parade of Lights followed the religious event. (AAL/PIA6/EJB)
