Bamboo eco park to rise in Quirino State University

DIFFUN, Quirino (PIA) - - The Quirino State University (QSU) recently launched the ‘Bambusari’, a development project meant to pursue environmental sustainability and academic progress.

Conceptualized by forester Joel G. Carig, together with Professors Dyanika P. Nolasco and Elizabeth T. Carig, the project commenced with the planting of 15 bamboo species in the campus.

Coined from “sari-saring bamboo”, meaning a variety of bamboo species, Carig said the project aims to transform idle lands in the university into a ‘bambusetum’ or an area planted with various bamboo species, either native or exotic, raised and cultivated either for scientific, educational, or aesthetic purposes.

The Bambusetum will serve as a Student Instructional Unit (SIU) for agriculture, forestry, biosystems, engineering, hospitality management, and tourism management; and at the same time a research area for faculty members.

“This is also expected to become an income generating project of the university, and in the long run contribute to mitigating climate change,” Carig said.

The proponents also aim to set up a Bamboo Park with different colors such as pink, black, orange, and other possible colors.

The environment project is expected to become a thriving Bamboo Eco Park with a proposed campsite and conference hall.

University president Hermenegildo F. Samoy Jr. expressed his support for the project, highlighting its significance for future generations.

“The Bamboo Park will provide students with firsthand learning experiences, fostering research and innovation in bamboo-related fields,” Samoy said. (OTB/TCB/PIA-2, QUIRINO)
