Romualdez commits Iloilo’s esplanade, grandstand expansion

ILOILO CITY (PIA) - - Improvements of two major infrastructures in this city are expected to commence this year.

This after House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez announced the expansion of the Iloilo Freedom Grandstand and the esplanade fronting the grandstand in his message during the Ati Tribes competition of the Dinagyang Festival 2024 held on January 28 at the fully occupied grandstand.

Martin noted that the grandstand needs to be expanded to free up congestion.

"Palagi kong binibisita itong Magandang Dinagyang Festival, pero sa totoo lang, masikip na, kaya siguro susuportahan ako ng mga kongresista at mga senador na i-expand natin itong grandstand ng konti dito, para hindi na tayo masikip (I

always visit this beautiful Dinagyang Festival, but honestly (the Freedom Grandstand) is cramped, so, maybe the Congressmen and Senators will support me in expanding this grandstand a little here, so that we won’t be constrained anymore)," said Romualdez.

He also committed to facilitating the funding of the two infrastructure projects.

The Iloilo Freedom Grandstand serves as the venue for the major activities of the Dinagyang festivities that include Kasadyahan and Ati Tribes competitions and Awarding Ceremony, among others.

It was built in 2018 as a replacement for the old grandstand with the same name located at JM Basa Street, also in City Proper, which was demolished for the revival of Sunburst Park.

The Iloilo River Esplanade is a linear park along the Iloilo River stretching 9.035 kilometers.

Martin was the guest of honor of this year’s Dinagyang Festival which was also attended by other national officials like Senators Ramon Revilla, Lito Lapid, Risa Hontiveros, Bong Go and Las Pinas City Representative Camille Villar-Genuino, among others.

Mayor Jerry Trenas expressed his gratitude to Romualdez for this development which will further boost efforts towards physical progress of the city.

"On behalf of the Ilonggos, I am very grateful for the project committed by our beloved House Speaker. This is indeed good news for us as we continue to level up the Dinagyang experience every year. Likewise, this is also a big boost to our continuous efforts toward the city's physical progress," said Trenas in a city’s public information office’s press report.
