DA gives P2.3M mechanization projects to farmers in Western Visayas

ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- Eleven farmers' cooperatives and associations (FCAs) in Western Visayas received farm mechanization projects through the Department of Agriculture's Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) Program.

These include 25 types of farm machinery for corn, high-value crops, and poultry production, given the DA’s efforts in advancing farm mechanization within its operational areas.

According to a DA statement, it was noted that sustainable agricultural mechanization is a crucial input for crop production, hence, giving small farmers access to appropriate machinery would impact land productivity and would leverage its potential to render postharvest, processing, and marketing activities.

The areas identified as beneficiaries have undergone Beneficiary Needs Assessment (BNA) which resulted in the need for mechanical support interventions as farmers have underlined the necessity for machinery services and requested access to technologies that could increase their output.

Likewise, per the report of SAAD, associations have raised their concerns about being unable to invest in farm machinery and equipment due to limited financial resources.

To answer these continuing efforts in increasing levels of mechanization supply chains, the SAAD program distributed in total, 12 units of granular applicators worth P50,000 each; six units of collapsible dryers worth P55,000 each; two units shredder machine worth P250,000 each; three units corn sheller worth P260,000 each; one unit of hand tractor worth P140,000; and one unit egg incubator worth P90,000 were delivered to the beneficiaries in the municipalities of San Lorenzo in Guimaras; Moises Padilla  and La Castellana  in Negros Occidental; Tangalan  and Buruanga in Aklan; and Bingawan  in Iloilo.

As several developments are being carried out in the production sector, enhancing farming efficiency in areas with much-needed support is urgently required according to the result of DA’s assessment. (AAL/AGP/PIA 6)
