PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan (PIA) -- US Ambassador to the Philippines MaryKay Carlson said the United States government will continue to support educational opportunities and resources for Palaweño learners through its American Corner at the Palawan State University (PSU).

PSU has a three-year agreement with the US Embassy in Manila to establish the American Corner.

"I was really pleased to hear the university president talk about the importance of connecting with the community— So others do have access to those resources through collaboration with the university,” she said.

The American Corner at PSU is part of the Southeast Asia network and of more than 650 American Spaces worldwide. 

The US government is also working on improving the connectivity in every American Corner in the country, like in Palawan, through USAID’s Better Access and Connectivity (BEACON) program.

Visiting PSU is part of Carlson’s itinerary in Puerto Princesa to see the progress of AC and the recipients of the Academy for Women Entrepreneur (AWE). 

The recipients presented their innovative products and expressed their appreciation for the support extended to them.

Even though there are no other American Corners yet in secondary-level schools in Palawan, Carlson said a lot of education programs are extended through USAID. There is support given to enhance the skills of learners needed for the future, she added.

“In some cases, we are training those who may be very well-educated in one field but need to shift focus. We have a lot of different programs, and we will continue to work with the Philippines in these areas,” she said. (RG/PIA Mimaropa - Palawan)
