DOT-CAR lauds Kalinga’s feats, contributions to tourism

CITY OF TABUK, Kalinga(PIA)--Department of Tourism-Cordillera (DOT-CAR)  lauded Kalinga’s feats and contributions to tourism.

In her keynote speech during the celebration of the province’s 29th Kalinga Founding Anniversary and 5th Bodong Festival on Feb. 14, DOT CAR Regional Director Jovita Ganongan praised Kalinga’s rich heritage that has become a magnet of local and foreign tourists, its Bodong Festival for its “immense potential” for tourism, and its cultural feats that have gained international attention.

“One shining example of Kalinga’s cultural significance is the living legend herself, Apo Whang-od. Her mastery of the traditional Kalinga tattooing called "batok" has gained international recognition. Apo Whang-od has become a symbol of our heritage and has drawn countless tourists eager to have her inked their skin with traditional motifs,” Ganongan said.

“Kalinga has also achieved a monumental feat by setting the Guinness World Record for the largest number of pot dancers and gong beaters. This remarkable accomplishment not only put us on the world map, but also presents an extraordinary opportunity to further leverage our branding,” she added, referring to the ‘Awong chi Gangsa, Agtu’n chi Banga’ spectacle last year.

Ganongan also cited the Pasil Slow Food Community for being included in the Slow Food international network, highlighting the environmental significance of the locality and its contribution to promoting sustainable tourism practices.

With its vibrant culture, arts, and nature-based destinations, Kalinga would be the “perfect highlight” in the DOT’s Philippine Experience Program (PEP), Ganongan said

Launched in 2023, the PEP aims to promote the rich heritage, arts, and culture of the Philippines through a series of caravans.

“[Kalinga] is renowned for its intricate handwoven textiles, basketry, and pottery. The Philippine Experience Program can showcase the talent of local weavers and artisans, allowing tourists to watch and appreciate the creation of this traditional handicrafts firsthand and be inspired by the artistry and creativity,” Ganongan said.

Kalinga also offers thrilling adventure activities like white water rafting and trekking, giving adrenaline junkies a chance to experience the province’s natural beauty from a different perspective.

“These nature-based adventures can be incorporated into the Philippine experience program which we are looking forward to have here in the province of Kalinga ensuring a balance between cultural immersion and outdoor exploration,” she said.(JDP/IOS-PIA  Kalinga)
