DENR announces conviction of illegal logger in Cavite

MARAGONDON, Cavite (PIA) – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources recently announced the successful prosecution of an individual who was arrested for the unlawful cutting of trees in the town of Maragondon in Cavite.

According to DENR, two forest protection officers from the PENRO Cavite were directed to monitor the activities of the individual who was reported to be engaged in the illegal cutting of trees in Barangay Pinagsanjan B. The individual was later arrested with 116.66 board feet of lumber found in his possession.

The individual was eventually convicted for violating Section 77 of Presidential Decree 705, which prohibits the collection, cutting, and sale of timber and other forest products without license 

The Department of Environment of Natural Resources (DENR) in CALABARZON stated that the perpetrators will additionally be charged for violating Section 7 (4) of RA 9175, commonly referred to as the Chainsaw Act of 2002. 

The unidentified illegal logger was sentenced to six (6) months and one (1) day of imprisonment after he was found guilty of the charge. 

In a statement, the DENR CALABARZON stated that the actions of PENRO Cavite reflect the agency’s steadfast commitment to enforcing environmental laws and combatting illegal forestry activities in the province.
