DICT launches Smart Village initiative in Sibugay

KABASALAN, Zamboanga Sibugay (PIA) - The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) launched the Smart Village Smart Island (SVSI) initiative in Zamboanga Sibugay in barangay Concepcion in the town of Kabasalan.

This initiative aims to connect geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas to the internet, providing access to information, communication channels, and online opportunities.

Barangay captain Danilo Peñol conveyed his gratitude on behalf of the residents for the initiative, underscoring the importance of technology as a catalyst for progress in their community with regard to education, communication, and various aspects of their community life.

Assistant Secretary Maria Teresa Camba emphasized the holistic and whole-of-government approach to delivering connectivity and sustainable services to disadvantaged communities. By providing access to information, remote jobs, and communication channels, technology becomes a driver of economic growth and an improved quality of life.

“I am sure that it will transform a lot of lives in the vicinity and around the area. We really want to be able to help and maximize the use of technology in different aspects of their lives,” Camba said.

DICT will also establish a Digital Transformation Center-Technology for Economic Development (DTC-Tech4ed) together with Kapunungan sa Gagmay'ng Mangingisda sa Concepcion (KGMC). This center will utilize laptops donated by the Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation, or EHUB, enabling the community to receive ICT literacy training, bridge the digital gap, empower individuals through online businesses, improve farming practices, and direct product sales.

To ensure the success of SVSI in BarangayConcepcion, a needs assessment was conducted to identify specific requirements and challenges. This helped stakeholders determine the necessary interventions and activities to bridge the gaps and identify partners for the initiative in the said barangay.

The endeavor is a significant step towards bridging digital inequality and empowering disadvantaged communities. Through collaborative efforts, DICT and stakeholders are shaping a technologically advanced and sustainable future for Barangay Concepcion. (KSA/EDT/RBI/PIA9-Zamboanga Sibugay)
