Former rebels in Zambo Sur get livelihood starter kits

GUIPOS, Zamboanga del Sur (PIA) - The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), alongside the 53rd Infantry "Matapat" Battalion and Lindongan Farmers Beneficiaries Multi-Purpose Cooperative (LIFABEMCO), facilitated the turnover of livelihood starter kits to seven former rebels who are being referred to as “Friends Rescued (FRs)”.

DOLE Regional Director Albert E. Gutib handed over a total of P210,000 worth of starter kits for barbers and masseuses, which were funded under the DOLE Integrated Livelihood Program (DILP). The kits aimed at supporting the FRs in their journey back into mainstream society.

"We will work together and unite all our efforts for your growth and development," he said.

This sentiment emphasizes the collaborative approach taken to empower the FRs and facilitate their successful reintegration.

The DOLE Integrated Livelihood Program (DILP), also known as the Kabuhayan program, underlines DOLE's contribution to the government's poverty reduction and inclusive growth plan. DILP seeks to reduce the vulnerability of the poor, vulnerable, and marginalized workers by providing grant assistance for capacity-building on livelihood ventures, whether for individual or group undertakings.

The event included crucial learning sessions on DOLE's programs and services, occupational safety and health, and financial literacy. The FRs gained insights into the significance of maintaining a healthy and safe workplace and received guidance on essential financial skills such as management, budgeting, and investing.

To ensure the well-being of the FRs, each individual is now covered by a one-year policy under the GSIS Personal Accident Insurance (GPAI). This insurance coverage adds an extra layer of security as the FRs embark on their new livelihood ventures.

This initiative shows how working together and supporting each other can make a real difference in people's lives. The DOLE-led effort highlights the power of simple actions to create positive changes, giving the FRs hope and a chance for a better future.
