CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro (PIA) -- A total of 68 motorized fiber-reinforced plastic boats were successfully turned over to a fishing community from barangays Binga, Poblacion, Caruray, and Port Barton in San Vicente, Palawan, whose livelihood were severely affected by Typhoon Odette in 2021.

These boats are part of the Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) interventions implemented under the Typhoon Odette Recovery Project of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and implemented with funding support from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

Other collaborators in the implementation of the project include Western Philippines University, Provincial Government of Palawan, and the respective local government units of the affected municipalities.

The boats serve as essential tools for the local fishermen, enabling them to resume their fishing activities and gradually rebuild their livelihoods. This intervention aims not only to address the immediate needs of the community but also to contribute to the long-term sustainability of their economic activities.

DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. delivered a compelling message, acknowledging the collaborative effort of the government, the academe, local government unit, and the community.

Solidum emphasized DOST’s commitment to community-based rehabilitation projects, exemplified by the Typhoon Odette Recovery Project.

"In this significant moment, we extend our appreciation to the key contributors for their unwavering support. The resilience demonstrated by the Palaweños in the aftermath of Typhoon Odette is truly commendable," Solidum said.

Solidum also called for continued investment in scientific research, urging local governments to prioritize evidence-based policies and programs.

He emphasized the importance of fostering scientific understanding within communities and concluded with a challenge for sustained collaboration, encapsulating a vision of empowerment and resilience for the affected community.

In a statement, DOST Mimaropa regional director Dr. Ma. Josefina P. Abilay conveyed her heartfelt appreciation for the success of the recovery project in San Vicente. She highlighted the project's dedication to science-based solutions. (GATS/PIA MIMAROPA/DOST)
