TUPAD helps 485 sardine industry workers affected by fishing ban

ZAMBOANGA CITY (PIA) – The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has extended emergency employment under its “Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers” (TUPAD) program to 485 individuals working in the fishing and canning industries in Zamboanga City.

The closed fishing season, which is a crucial period for marine conservation and replenishment, disrupted the livelihood of many individuals reliant on the fishing and canning sectors.

Recognizing the impact on the workforce, especially in Zamboanga City with the largest canning and fishing companies, the government, through DOLE, has initiated the TUPAD program to provide temporary employment opportunities for affected workers.

Under the TUPAD program, 485 workers from the fishing and canning industries in Zamboanga City have been enlisted to participate in emergency employment activities. These activities encompass various tasks aimed at community development and environmental conservation, providing workers with essential income during the closed fishing season.

The closed fishing season, which ran from Nov. 15, 2023 to Feb. 15, 2024, prompted various commercial canning and fishing companies to suspend operations, directly impacting their workers.

Mursedin Jadjuli, one of the beneficiaries, expressed gratitude for the program, emphasizing its significance in providing stable income during difficult times.

“Masaya po ako na nakasama po ako sa TUPAD, kase sobrang hirap po talaga kapag fish ban. Wala pong stable income. At least ngayon makakatulong na ito sa aming pang araw-araw sa bahay. Salamat DOLE,” she said.

(I am happy to be part of TUPAD because it is really difficult when the fishing season is closed. There is no stable income. At least now, this will help us with our daily expenses at home. Thank you, DOLE.)

According to DOLE  Regional Director Albert E. Gutib, as fishing companies halt operations to allow marine replenishment, the department remains committed to supporting affected workers and catering to their needs. DOLE has allocated P10 million for emergency employment, benefiting around 2,600 displaced workers.

Amidst the challenges posed by the closed fishing season, DOLE's initiative underscores its dedication to providing social protection and sustainable livelihoods for vulnerable workers in Zamboanga City. (EDT/MLE/PIA9-Zamboanga City)
