DSWD continues extensive psychosocial interventions for landslide victims

DAVAO CITY (PIA) -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Davao Region Continues to provide constant and extensive psychosocial interventions to the landslide survivors in Masara, Davao de Oro.

This is alongside the continued provision of food and non-food items to the affected families currently staying in the evacuation centers.

Atty. Vanessa Goc-ong, DSWD XI Regional Director, emphasizes that DSWD-XI is collaborating with hospitals in Davao region to provide extensive psychosocial intervention to the victims of landsides in Masara, Davao de Oro.

DSWD XI regional director  Vanessa Goc-ong said that extensive psychosocial intervention is very much needed, especially for survivors who personally witnessed how their loved ones were buried alive during the landslide.

“We witnessed the grief of the families, and it cannot be done in one day or in one week ( (psychosocial) intervention, so it should be continuous and extensive through our psychologist and psychiatrist,” Goc-ong said during the Kapehan sa Dabaw at SM City Davao.

She emphasized that the psychosocial intervention is a very crucial intervention apart from the provision of food and non-food items, saying, “ We need to process the emotions of the families who were affected.”

She added that aside from the agency’s psychologists and psychiatrists, there are also some mental health professionals from other organizations and agencies who help in providing psychosocial interventions, citing the Davao Regional Medical Center.

DSWD XI’s psychosocial intervention employs a series of activities that help families overcome the tragic incident, such as focus group discussions, educational activities, and therapeutic activities that are being managed by the camp manager at the evacuation centers.

For children, part of the psychosocial intervention is to ensure that the activities are therapeutic and educational.

Meanwhile, Goc-ong shared that as they ensure child-friendly spaces at the abuses, they are also monitoring abuses against women and children at the evacuation centers.

She also revealed that they are intensifying their monitoring inside the evacuation centers, following reports that organizations affiliated with the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF) infiltrated and tried to indoctrinate the children.

“We have received some reports about that. That's why atong gipa-igting ang atong (we intensified our) monitoring over the camp managers to really thresh [this] out,” she said.

Goc-ong emphasized that they are conducting strict screenings of all the organizations that will enter the evacuation centers and want to help and give assistance to ensure that those with negative intentions cannot infiltrate the camps.
