CITY OF TABUK,Kalinga(PIA)-- Kalinga, the "rice granary of the Cordillera" remains the top producer of the staple as well as the biggest contributor to corn production in the Cordillera region in 2023.
Reports of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)-Kalinga showed the province contributed 112, 839.99 metric tons of palay, or 34 percent of the Cordillera’s total annual production of 171, 771.45 metric tons.
Kalinga also produced 63,660.19 metric tons of corn, or 37 percent of the region’s total yield of 171,771.54 metric tons for the whole cropping period.
Apayao was the second biggest palay producer with 75,730.27 metric tons( 23 percent), followed by Abra with 74,414.98 MT(22 percent); Ifugao, 34, 201.71MT(10 percent); Benguet, 21, 524.15MT(seven percent), and Mountain Province, 12,758.56(four percent).
In terms of corn production, the second highest contributor was Ifugao with 51,784.01 MT(30 percent); followed by Mountain Province with 23,281.09MT(14 percent); Apayao,17,005.45 MT(ten percent); Abra, 5,575 MT(nine percent), and Benguet, 465.80 MT.( 0.27 percent).
The production data was gathered through the Palay Production Survey and Corn Production Survey which generate estimates on production, area, yield and other production-related figures.
Said surveys support the data needs of planners, policy and decision makers, and other stakeholders in the agriculture sector particularly the National Economic and Development Authority,the Department of Agriculture, and its attached agencies including the Philippine Rice Research Institute, and the Philippine Council for Agriculture and Fisheries, said PSA-Kalinga chief statistical specialist Maribel Dalayda.
