Davao del Norte turns over P8.7M boardwalk project to Samal Island

DAVAO DEL NORTE (PIA) -- The provincial government of Davao del Norte recently turned over to the city government of the Island Garden City of Samal the P8.7 million Sanipaan Boardwalk and Staging Area as an ecotourism support facility for the Sanipaan Marine Park in Barangay Tambo, Babak District.

The project was funded through the Eco-Tourism Development Project under the Sustainable Tourism Development Program of the Davao del Norte provincial government, which is aligned with Republic Act 9593, or the Tourism Act of 2009.


Reports from the Provincial Information Communication and Knowledge Management Office (PICKMO) said that the project will cover the construction of a tourist reception hall and a parking area to accommodate more visitors coming to see the vanishing islands at the Sanipaan Marine Park.

Provincial Tourism Officer Noel Daquioag explained that the 216-meter-long Sanipaan Boardwalk was just one of the 28 projects funded through the P200 million Parks Development Project that the province had designed to recover fast from the tourism slump during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sanipaan Boardwalk project to trigger more economic activities for the locals to  earn a living, not only to cater to the influx of tourists.

"Iba pag maidevelop natin ang ating tourism industry kasi iba ang hakot ng tourism. Parang sabihin natin na head to toe yong maging income-generating natin. And this project, I hope, will become a beacon of hope for the present and coming generations," he said.

(Developing our tourism industry can have a significant impact because tourism brings in various income revenues. It's like aiming for a comprehensive approach where income generation spans from head-to-toe.) 

Jubahib, however, pointed out the need to strengthen the waste management system and beef up the water and power supply, which he cited as significant factors in ensuring sustainable tourism.

Samal Mayor Al David Uy, together with the barangay officials of Barangay Tambo, expressed gratitude to the governor and the provincial government for their continued support for Samal, especially in its tourism sector.

“Ang amoang Sanipaan Marine Park ginadayo na gyud na siya’y mga turista. Then, mapasalamaton mi sa barangay kay ang atong mga constituents diri hinay-hinay nang naka-benefit,” Brgy. Tambo Punong Barangay Johnel Montes said.(Our Sanipaan Marine Park is now attracting a lot of tourists. We're thankful to the barangay because our constituents are gradually benefiting from it.)
