Davao to be positioned as beauty and wellness destination in southern Philippines

DAVAO CITY (PIA) -- The Department of Tourism (DOT) regional office is looking to push for medical and wellness tourism to take advantage of the presence of several aesthetic centers and clinics in the region, particularly in Davao City.

“This is a new product we want to develop. Davao now has a lot of clinics, even dental, medical, and beauty clinics. Marami na, so we want them to be accredited with DOT so we can help promote them,” said DOT-XI Regional Director Tanya Rabat Tan.

The DOT Davao head recently joined Davao City Vice Mayor J. Melchor Quitain Jr. in gracing the opening of the Belo Medical Group clinic in Abreeza Mall in Davao City.

The Belo Clinic in Davao is the sole branch in Mindanao of the country’s largest medical aesthetics group.  The newly opened clinic is twice as big as the previous Davao Belo Clinic located on Abreeza Mall’s second floor.

Rabat Tan said that while Belo Clinic is DOT-accredited in Manila, they are still in the process of accrediting their new clinic in Davao.

“When they are an accredited medical and wellness facility, part sila sa ating mga promotions, like sa mga travel shows, kasama sila, and trainings. hat is one of the benefits of our accreditation is the training they get from the DOT,” Rabat Tan said.

Since medical and wellness is a new tourism product in Davao, she said that they are working to lure more clinics and centers to accredit with the DOT.

“Since bago pa siya for Davao na mag-accredit, that is what we are working on para mapadami,” Rabat Tan said.

Dr. Hayden Kho, managing director of the Belo Medical Group, said they were prompted to expand their center in Davao because of the number of tourists coming to Davao.

“The vision of Belo is to make the Philippines the beauty hub of Asia, and our clients in Metro Manila ang lagi nilang sinasabi sa amin ang favorite destination nila is Cebu and Davao, and we got worried because when they go to Metro Manila and they see the beautiful clinics, and they go to Davao and they see the lungga (small place) of the Belo Medical Group,” Kho said.

(The vision of Belo is to make the Philippines the beauty hub of Asia. Our clients in Metro Manila often tell us that their favorite destinations are Cebu and Davao. We got worried because when they go to Metro Manila, they see the beautiful clinics, but in Davao, they find the small space of the Belo Medical Group.)

He said the company decided to find a bigger space, make the rooms bigger, and make the experience so much better in their Davao clinic.

Potentials

Aside from beauty and aesthetics, the DOT has identified the potential of Davao for medical tourism in the past few years.

Davao City has a pool of medical professionals offering competitive rates compared to those in Manila and Cebu, while hospital fees are relatively lower. New hospitals have also opened, such as the 250-bed Lanang Premiere Doctors Hospital in Davao City, which was designed with medical tourism in mind.

The country’s third St. Luke’s Hospital will be built in Davao City, and it is also eyeing the foreign market, particularly those coming from Indonesia and Brunei.

Medical tourism is one of the preferred investment areas that are provided with incentives by the city government through the Davao City Investment and Promotions Center. (RGA/PIA Davao)
