QUEZON CITY, (PIA) -- Pasig City took a significant step toward sustainable transportation with the inauguration of its first solar-powered Electric Vehicle Charging Station (EVCS).

"Ang proyekto na ito ay kaugnay ng pagtataguyod ng pagkakaroon ng sustainable transportation infrastructure sa Lungsod Pasig (This project is in line with the promotion of sustainable transportation infrastructure in Pasig City)," Mayor Vico Sotto said.

The ceremony, held at the Pasig Kabuhayan Center in Barangay Sta. Lucia, highlighted the collaborative effort behind the project.

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) program analyst Gwyneth Palmos explained how the EVCS forms part of a larger initiative - the Promotion of Low Carbon Urban Transport Systems in the Philippines (LCT).

This project, a collaboration between the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and UNDP with funding from the Global Environment Facility, positions Pasig City as one of four pilot sites.

Joining Sotto are Pasig City Rep. Roman Romulo, UNDP Philippines resident representative Selva Ramachandran, Vice Mayor Robert Jaworski Jr., and Transportation Undersecretary for Road Transport and Infrastructure Anneli Lontoc who delivered their respective messages emphasizing the project's importance.

Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, a demonstration highlighted the EVCS' functionality.

The EVCS boasts three charging terminals, capable of servicing six electric vehicles (EVs) simultaneously (two EVs per terminal).

The station's solar power technology not only promises cost savings for Pasig City but also contributes to reduced pollution by utilizing a renewable energy source.

This initiative aligns with Pasig City's commitment to establishing a sustainable transportation infrastructure. Building upon the 2023 launch of an EVCS at the Pasig City Mega Parking II in District I, this new station expands accessibility to this infrastructure for residents across Pasig's two districts.

Beyond charging city-owned electric vehicles like e-trikes, e-quads, and e-bikes, the EVCS will eventually offer free public use upon full operation.

Prior to public access, personnel from the City Transportation Development and Management Office and City Engineering Department will undergo training on the proper operation and maintenance of the EVCS. (JEG/PIA-NCR)
