Marcos says tax collection key to pandemic recovery

ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) -- President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. emphasized the importance of tax collection in revenue generation.

“The truly effective tax administration is essentially a partnership between the taxpayer and the tax agency where the collaborative effort to fulfill the latter and spiritual tax laws are indispensable in revenue generation,” the President said in his video message at the launching the 2024 BIR Tax Campaign in Roxas City.

The president emphasized that paying taxes is very important now, especially after the global pandemic and the other economic shocks arriving in the country.

The Revenue District Office No. 72 of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) recognized the top taxpayers of the province of Capiz during the launch.

The top three for Individual Taxpayers, Non-Individual Taxpayers, and National Government Agencies/Local Government Units categories were given recognition during the program.

As for the Individual Taxpayers category, Joel Fresnillo Alado from Rock 101 Construction and Supply ranked 1st, followed by Ana Coo Chui Tan from Capiz Ace Marketing, and Antonio Ernesto Mahngar Villaruz.

As the top three Non-Individual Taxpayers, the Robi-Jbee Corporation was recognized, followed by the Merrymat Consumer Corporation, and Eperformax Contact Centers Roxas Corporation.

The LGU Panay was hailed as top NGA/LGU taxpayer, together with the LGU Sigma, and the Capiz provincial government.

Revenue Region 6 Director Joseph M. Catapia lauded the Capiz taxpayers for their overwhelming attendance during the launch.

“Indeed this is a great show of your support to the BIR. Here, we can see the true unity of the Capiznons, especially in paying the right taxes to the government," said Catapia, as it aligns with this year’s theme, “Sa Tamang Buwis, Pag-asenso'y Mabilis."

Catapia reported the State of the BIR Address during the launch where he shared that Revenue Region No. 11 composed of the provinces of Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Iloilo, and Guimaras has been performing well in collecting taxes for the past five years and is consistently increasing its actual collection revenue.

However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a drop in the collection.

“As we all know, the COVID-19 pandemic has paralyzed our economy, not only nationwide but worldwide. However despite the pandemic period, the assigned collection of the region had been consistently exceeded,” Catapia stated.

He also discussed that from 2022 to 2023, the actual collection increased by 8.27 percent.

Catapia reiterated to the taxpayers, especially to the business and sale of real property taxpayers, to pay their taxes dutifully, stop engaging in under-declared sales, and claim input taxes using fake Value Added Tax (VAT), as paying the taxes is one of the sacred duty and responsibilities to the country.

The Capiz provincial and Roxas City governments also expressed their full support for the BIR 2024 Tax Campaign.

“Rest assured that next year we will try our best to be still an awardee for the top compliant local government in the province of Capiz,” Provincial Administrator for the second district of Capiz Rose Gardose said on behalf of the Capiz Gov. Fredenil Castro. (AGP/PLF/PIA Capiz)
