Mountain Province strengthens support to sports development

BONTOC, Mountain Province(PIA)--The provincial government recently led the inauguration of the provincial sports center in Poblacion, Bontoc  to help develop homegrown athletes, and promote sports activities for health.


Governor Bonifacio C. Lacwasan Jr., Dionisio Wacdisen representing Congressman Maximo Y. Dalog Jr.,  and Sonia G. Mayaen led the inauguration of the sports facility called the Governor Leonard G. Mayaen Sports Center.


The sports facility through Provincial Ordinance No. 493, is named after the late governor for  spearheading the conceptualization of this project. Mayaen died of cardiac arrest in March 2016 while in office.

As a background, the construction of the center started its first phase in 2016 through a loan from the Land Bank of the Philippines amounting to P30 million. A second loan from the LBP in the amount P20M  was acquired for the completion of the second phase in 2020. The third phase covered the  finishing works in 2021 with a budget of P5M from the provincial government’s General Fund.


The building was finally completed on November 17,2023 using 10 million from the provincial government.


Lacwasan expressed gratitude to the Mayaen family’s significant contributions to the province’s development.

Agosto Bugnosen conveyed  the Mayaen family’s appreciation for the recognition bestowed upon the former governor.


“With the inauguration of this sports center, we are humbled and grateful for giving recognition to our Dad, for his service and contribution and for the love and sacrifice he gave to the people, and for Mountain Province,” he said.

Lacwasan  urged government employees, partners and stakeholders to continue collaborating for progress.


“Dawatek kadatayo, dakayo amin, to all stakeholders, ta ituloy tayo ti agtinulong, unity, tapno mas maymayat ti maaramidan tayo, maicontribute tayo, tapno maituloy tayo dagitoy naaramidan ti previous officials tayo, ” (I ask all of you, all stakeholders, that we continue  help each other, unity, so that we can contribute  and further the accomplishments of  our previous officials) he said.


Congressman Dalog, Bontoc Mayor Jerome Tudlong Jr. and Punong Barangay Florence Taguiba expressed confidence that the center would greatly enhance sports activities in the province. (JDP/CVBT-PIA CAR, Mountain Province)
