DOLE employs Marinduque folk for agriculture, environmental preservation

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro -- Under its Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) program, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has employed 370 residents of the municipalities of Torrijos and Sta. Cruz in Marinduque to involve them in waste reduction, management, and sustainable agriculture practices.

The program has successfully deployed 320 beneficiaries from Torrijos and 50 from Sta. Cruz to help in cleaning barangay roads and creating compost pits in their respective areas from March 1 to 18.

By engaging in these activities, the beneficiaries are playing a pivotal role in enhancing the cleanliness and ecological balance of their localities.

An integral part of the TUPAD program involves educating the participants about the importance of waste reduction and management. This knowledge empowers them to contribute effectively to environmental preservation efforts in their communities. Additionally, the program introduces sustainable agriculture practices, preparing the beneficiaries to utilize eco-friendly methods in their farming activities.

The creation of compost pits stands out as a noteworthy component of the program, addressing the issue of organic waste accumulation and its adverse effects on the environment. These pits will serve as a sustainable solution to manage organic waste by converting it into compost, which, in turn, can be used to enrich the soil in community gardens.

Prior to the actual work, TUPAD Focal Maria Cielo O. Orilla, facilitated a one-day orientation. The beneficiaries received their personal protective equipment (PPE) including TUPAD uniforms, caps, and gloves which they will use during their 15-day emergency employment. Beneficiaries of the program were enrolled under GSIS accident insurance for one year.

After rendering community service, each beneficiary will receive a total of P5,925.00 or P395 per day in compliance with the prevailing minimum wage in MIMAROPA Region, through remittance partners. (JJGS/PIA MIMAROPA)
