DOST opens junior-level science scholarships

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA) -- To nurture the development of individuals in the field of science and technology, the 2024 Junior Level Science Scholarships are now open for applications, inviting eligible second-year college students enrolled in the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) priority science and technology courses at identified universities during the Second Semester of AY 2023-2024. 

"As long as karon nga period, you are a regular second-year college student, and then ang imong general weighted average kay at least 83 percent or its equivalent, and then walay conditional mark like INC (incomplete) and then wala pu'y failing grade, so kana sila pwede mag-apply sa ginatawag nato nga Junior Level Science Scholarship," James Dagala, DOST-10 project technical assistant, said.  

[As long as in the current period you are a regular second-year college student and then your general weighted average is at least 83 percent or its equivalent, and then there is no conditional mark like INC (incomplete) and there is no failing grade, you can apply for what we call the Junior Level Science Scholarship.]

He added that non-academic subjects are not factored into the GWA computation. Additionally, applicants must be natural-born Filipino citizens, exhibit good moral character, and be in good health. Those who previously applied for or took the Junior Level Science Scholarship Examination but did not qualify or did not avail of the scholarship award are also encouraged to apply.

The application period commenced on March 4 and will run until May 31. The qualifying exam is scheduled for July 28. Interested candidates can access the application form, Form C-I, on the official website, jlss.science-scholarships.ph. Alongside the form, applicants must submit their official transcript of records (TOR) or true copy of grades from the specified academic periods, a recent passport-size photo, a birth certificate, proof of parents' income, a notarized affidavit of guardianship, and a marriage certificate if applicable.

"We are encouraging kadtong gusto mag-apply nga mag-andam na sa mga required nga documents aron kung mag-open na ang atoang registration nga form, pwede na dayon sila mag-register diretso, and maka-upload na dayon sila sa ilahang mga requirements," Dagala said.

[We are encouraging those who want to apply to prepare the required documents so that when our registration form opens, they can register directly and upload their requirements immediately.]

To apply, candidates need to register on the website, provide all required details, including parental income, and upload soft copies of the necessary documents. Following submission, applicants are advised to await their test permit, which will be issued in July 2024. Upon receiving the permit, candidates will proceed to take the exam. Potential qualifiers will subsequently be required to upload certification confirming their status as regular third-year college students.

The list of official qualifiers will be announced in October 2024, with the scholarship's effectivity set for the first semester of AY 2024-2025. This scholarship program aims to foster excellence and innovation within the academic community.
