Iloilo City commences activities for Rabies Awareness Month

ILOILO CITY -- Massive rabies vaccination and neutering services were recently offered in different barangays in Iloilo City Proper District to mark the observance of Rabies Awareness Month.

The Iloilo City Government through its Office of the City Veterinarian spearheaded the event from March 5 to 7 to strengthen rabies awareness, help control pet population, and promote responsible pet ownership.

At least 992 pets have been vaccinated in barangays Gen. Hughes, Blumentritt-Monica, Zamora-Milleca, Sto. Rosario Duran, Concepcion, Veterans Village, Legaspi de la Rama, Muelle Loney, and Arsenal Durana.

Meanwhile, 51 pets were neutered and spayed in barangays Zamora Milleza and Concepcion as well as the City Vet Office.

City Veterinarian Dr. Fernando Abulencia, for his part, encouraged pet owners to be responsible by prioritizing their pet's health and well-being through vaccination and consider neutering or spaying them.

He also urged the public to participate in the activities and avail the free services of the City Vet Office.

The observance of Rabies Awareness Month in March is anchored on Republic Act No. 9482, otherwise known as the Anti-Rabies Act of 2007.

This law led to the formation of the National Anti-Rabies Committee and the National Anti-Rabies Program, the framework that upholds cooperation among government agencies, non-government organizations (NGOs) and people’s organization (POs) for the prevention and control of rabies in the country.
