Antique information officers back West Philippine Sea awareness campaign

SAN JOSE, Antique (PIA) -- Members of the Antique Association of Information Officers (AAIO) recently expressed support for the West Philippine Sea (WPS) information campaign initiative.

This is amid tensions in the West Philippine Sea which, according to the National Intelligence Coordinating Agency (NICA), have escalated in recent weeks due to the aggression of the Chinese Coast Guard (CCG).

Apart from maritime confrontations between the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and its Chinese counterpart, another significant concern for Filipino authorities is disinformation and propaganda across various media which malign government efforts in the WPS.

To combat disinformation and propaganda and raise awareness about the Philippines’ sovereignty in the disputed waters, NICA seeks to engage with the grassroots communities through partnerships with local organizations such as the AAIO.

In a briefing, Audrey de Guzman from the NICA Central Office said that their agency is banking on the support of Antiqueño information officers in communicating to their respective localities information about government initiatives in the WPS, particularly those asserting the country’s

rights as enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Laws of the Seas (UNCLOS).

De Guzman stressed that the issue of the WPS is a matter of national concern that all Filipinos must be aware of and speak about, affirming the country’s sovereign rights.

In response, Peter Edward Perez, AAIO vice president for Local Government Units (LGUs), said that Antiqueño information officers stand ready to support and contribute to the WPS information campaign of NICA and the National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea (NTF-WPS).

Further, in a statement, PCG spokesperson for the WPS Commodore Jay Tarriela also underscored the significance of Filipinos expressing aloud their support for the Philippines in the disputed waters rather than just being silent, urging his fellow citizens to care and fight for the country’s rights and freedom.

Tarriela, however, reiterated that the government is firm on resolving the maritime disputes peacefully through diplomacy and open communication, noting that despite water cannon attacks and lasering of Filipino troops, the Philippines has remained calm, tolerant, and professional.

The official added that the Philippines has now adopted a policy of transparency to openly expose China’s bullying behavior and provocative actions in the West Philippine Sea that undermine regional peace and stability. (AGP/BPS/PIA Antique)
