Tagum City health programs continue to benefit people

TAGUM CITY (PIA) -- Residents of Tagum City and neighboring towns continue to benefit from the various health programs of the city government.

Tagum City Mayor Rey Uy took pride in the milestones of the local government unit (LGU)-initiated health programs as among the priorities of the city government to improve the health sector as outlined in the “We Are Tagum” 10-Point Agenda.

The health initiatives of the city are also anchored on President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr.'s 8-Point Socioeconomic Agenda, particularly in providing Filipinos with access to healthcare services through the construction, rehabilitation, and upgrading of health facilities and the purchase of medical equipment.

Uy cited the “Balik Sigla” program, which aims to provide free physical therapy sessions to numerous stroke patients in the city who cannot afford the pricey cost of therapy sessions.

In 2023, a total of 467 beneficiaries benefited from the program.

Uy said that physical therapists from the City Health Office go around the barangays to provide therapy sessions for patients.

Another health program is called “The Doctor is in Your House,” which intends to provide free medical services to the residents at the convenience of their respective homes without going to the hospitals.

Implemented since 2022, around 1,281 residents have already benefited from the program, where they availed of free medical checkups, medicines, and assistive devices such as canes and wheelchairs.

“Atong namatikdan nga pipila sa atong mga pasyente maglisod na og lakaw ug dili na kaadtu sa ospital. Busa, aron matabangan sila, nahimong aktibo ang atong City Health Office kauban nag mga barangay health stations sa pagpadangat og medical didto mismo sa ilahang mga panimalay,”  Uy stated.

(We have noticed that some of our patients have difficulty walking, and some can no longer go to the hospital. So, to help them, our City Health Office actively coordinates with the barangay health stations to deliver medical care to their homes.)

Among the beneficiaries is Ranillo Gavino from Barangay Cuambogan, who has been diagnosed as hypertensive.

“Dako kaayu akong pasalamat kay unang una, di na ko mo-adtu sa hospital. Diri pa gud mismo sa balay. Dako kaayu ni nga tabang para sa amoa then dili pod mi mahasol,” Gavino said.

(I am very grateful because I will no longer go to the hospital. The medical services can be done right here at home. This is a big help for us.)

The city’s ATIMAN Center, or the Atimanon, Tagdon, Ilhon, Matutuon, Amumahon Nato (Care, Attend, Acknowledge, Nurture, Nourish) program,

has also been helping numerous mental health patients who are given free psychotherapy, play therapy, coaching, and medication services among others.

Since its creation in June 2023, the center has catered to 170 patients, of whom 88 are children, 47 are adolescents, and 35 are adults.

The mayor shared in his report that the center was initially for the youth; however, due to demands from other age groups, the center expanded its services to all age groups.

“Sa sugod, ato kining gibuhat nga programa alang sa atong mga kabatan-onan nga nanginahangaln og dakong pagtagad sa ilang mental health. Apan atong nakita nga ang tanang pangedaran—adults, adolescents, children, nanginahanglan og dakong pagtagad,” Uy explained.

(Initially, we created this program for our youth who need attention for their mental health, but we see that people of all ages—adults, adolescents and children—also need attention.)

Uy reaffirmed his commitment to strengthen the program, saying, “Atong pakusgan ang maong programa aron matabangan ang atong mga kaigsuonang nakasinati og mental disabilities.”

(We will strengthen this program to help people who experience mental disabilities.)

The LGU of Tagum has also been carrying out the “Eye Program” under the “Project Caring for Others” in partnership with the Davao Regional Medical Center (DRMC).

Launched in 2022, the “Eye Program” has since served 1,821 beneficiaries from the city and its neighboring town for free eye consultations.

Around 229 beneficiaries have availed of free eye surgeries, while 5,000 received reading glasses and 2,158 were given prescription glasses.

Another development on the health program is the construction of Super Health Centers in La Filipina, Mankilam, and Magugpo South, as well as a dialysis center at the City Hall Complex.

Uy said that these facilities will be a big help to the residents of Tagum and nearby towns, as they will no longer go to Davao City and other areas for health treatment.

He reaffirmed his commitment to continue and strengthen the health programs of the city to reach and help more people, not only in the city but also in its neighboring towns. (ASO/PIA Davao)
