Ilocos Region holds convention to strengthen gender equality efforts

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union (PIA) – To celebrate National Women's Month, the Regional Gender and Development Committee in Region 1 (RGADC-1) partnered with advocates and government agencies to hold a Gender Focal Point System Assembly cum GAD Convention on March 21.
 
The event, held online and at Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University-Open University System in this city, gathered over 267 participants from various government agencies, local government units, universities, and non-government organizations across the Ilocos Region.
 
Lawyer Harold Kub-aron, Commission on Human Rights regional director and RGADC-1 chairperson, highlighted the convention's role in strengthening gender equality efforts.
 
“This assembly stands as a testament to our unwavering commitment to championing the rights and empowerment of all individuals, regardless of gender, and fostering a culture of diversity and respect within our communities,” he said.
 
He highlighted its aim to reinforce dedication to gender equality and inclusivity within communities, establish a shared perspective on the GAD Agenda and its long-term goals, and motivate participants by showcasing the achievements of women and men in the region.
 
Kub-aron further explained that the convention featured workshops, discussions, and interactive sessions designed to enhance knowledge of gender issues, facilitate the exchange of successful approaches to achieving gender equality, and collaborate on innovative strategies to address challenges.
 
“Together, we will harness our collective wisdom and expertise to pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable future for all,” he added.
 
Ilocos Norte Governor Matthew Marcos Manotoc, also the Regional Development Council chairperson, expressed his support for the event, which is now in its fourth year.
 
He emphasized the importance of creating a space that celebrates diversity and offers equal opportunities for everyone.
 
The convention featured resource persons from the Philippine Commission on Women who discussed the GAD Strategic Framework and Plan.
 
Additionally, women in government leading advancements in science, technology, and poverty alleviation shared their experiences, offering practical examples of achieving success.
 
The convention, themed "WE R1 (ARE ONE) for gender equality and inclusive society," signifies the region's commitment to a unified approach towards gender equality. (JCR/AMB/PIA Region 1)
