LGU Isabela City, PH Coffee Board train coffee growers; ink partnership for 5-year dev’t plan

ISABELA CITY, Basilan (PIA) – The coffee growers and farmers from various barangays in Isabela City de Basilan participated in a three-day training of trainers (TOT) for coffee growers, held recently in the Philippines' Coffee Capital Amadeo, Cavite.

This knowledge upskilling and benchmarking was made possible through the initiative of Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman, who has been passionate about revitalizing the local coffee industry in Isabela City as a potential economic driver.

During the first day of the workshop, Dr. Alejandro Mojica, a renowned coffee researcher and director of the Philippine Coffee Board, provided a comprehensive lecture on coffee production fundamentals, including processing, morphology, and various coffee varieties. This was followed by a practical demonstration on planting and drying techniques, equipping the participants with hands-on experience.

The second day of the workshop was hosted by Jose and Jocelyn Mamar, a husband-and-wife team from John and Marga's Nursery Farm in Bailen, Cavite. Jocelyn Mamar, a 2023 UPLIFT Awardee for Agriculture, shared her expertise in coffee seedling production and best practices for coffee plant management. The participants learned about distinguishing coffee varieties, soil media preparation, and the benefits of companion planting. Meanwhile, Jose Mamar discussed water management solutions.

On the third day, Dr. Mojica refreshed the participants on coffee sorting, and Princess Kumala Elardo presented on managing farm wastes and using biofertilizers. Olive Puentespina, a pioneering cheesemaker and advocate for sustainable practices, highlighted the successful transition of her farm to purely organic methods, encouraging the participants to utilize household waste to nourish their coffee trees.

The event culminated in a monumental moment with the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the Isabela City Local Government Unit (LGU), the Philippine Coffee Board, Inc. (PCBI), and the Isabela City Coffee Growers Association (ICCGA). This new program, named "Beaning Opportunities: KAPEsabela," aims to empower Isabela City coffee growers by engaging them in planting and managing Robusta and Liberica coffee trees, creating a sustainable livelihood initiative.

The program plans to implement a phased planting schedule for coffee growers in different barangays in Isabela City over five years, starting with six barangays in 2023, followed by four barangays per year from 2024 to 2026, and concluding with two barangays in 2027.

This transformative program, combined with the insightful training, is set to pave the way for a thriving coffee industry in Isabela City, fostering economic growth and empowering local coffee growers. This is also another step for Isabela City as it aims to revive its coffee industry. (RVC/EDT/NDR-PIA Basilan with reports and photos from Isabela City Agriculture’s Office)
