NIA starts construction of projects to improve irrigation in Mimaropa

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro (PIA) – The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) in Mimaropa region launched the construction of various irrigation projects for 2024.

These irrigations include the Maliwanag Communal Irrigation System (CIS) and Sagana Communal Irrigation System in the province of Oriental Mindoro.

Acting Division Manager Engr. Maria Victoria O. Malenab led the inspection of the irrigations on March 15, which aimed to assess the state of the irrigation system and devise strategies for improvement.

The Maliwanag CIS is set to undergo repairs, particularly focusing on the diversion dam and protection works. The project is expected to irrigate approximately 64.2 hectares of agricultural land, benefitting a total of 47 farmers. The targeted completion date for the project is set for September 10, 2024.

Meanwhile, the Sagana CIS is now building a canal lining that will irrigate approximately 100 hectares of land, helping 46 farmers in total. The projected completion date for the project is August 10, 2024.

Underscoring the commitment of NIA and its partners including Mharphy Construction & Supply and Lucky Shining Star Development Corp., they expedite the process while maintaining high-quality standards.

Once completed, the improved irrigation systems are poised to significantly enhance farming activities in the area, enabling local farmers to cultivate their lands more efficiently and effectively.

This endeavor not only addresses the immediate agricultural needs of the community but also contributes to the broader objectives of promoting rural development and food security in Oriental Mindoro.

With concerted efforts from all stakeholders involved, NIA remains steadfast in its mission to foster sustainable growth and prosperity in the region's agricultural sector. (GATS/PIA MIMAROPA)
