BFP  holds fire square roadshow in Sagada; calls for whole of nation involvement in fire safety

SAGADA, Mountain Province(PIA)--The Bureau of Fire Protection reiterated its  commitment to assist and protect the lives in the community, as it led the regional “Bida ka sa Fire Square Roadshow ” in this town recently.

BFP  Deputy Chief for Operation  FCSupt. Wilberto Rico Niel A. Kwan Tiu emphasized that while BFP is committed to keeping the people safe against the danger destructive fires, fire  safety is everyone's responsibility including children; it is a whole- of- nation responsibility.

The fire square roadshow intends to promote public safety awareness, and life safety skills, and to develop a culture for safety, security and discipline, he said.

 “This activity highlights the propagating of fire safety awareness, and empowering all sectors of the society including children, elders, and the vulnerable members of the community to become a disaster-ready and resilient people,” Tiu said.

The two-day roadshow featured 12 informative and interactive booths where Sagada students, their teachers, and some guardians were exposed to firefighting techniques, fire prevention education, and emergency response.

The Fire Safety Tips booth provided informative lecture on how to avoid kitchen fire, electrical fire, as well as the Exit Drills in the Home (E.D.I.T.H)

The Static Display booth showcased the different tools and equipment of the BFP in firefighting and rescue operations.

The HAZMAT(hazardous materials) booth discussed  the negative effects of hazardous chemical/ material, and equipment  being used during rescue operations involving such materials that may pose a reasonable risk to health, property, or the environment. Hazmats include substances such as toxic chemicals, fuels, nuclear waste products, and biological, chemical, and radiological agents.

The “How to Use First Aid Firefighting Equipment” booth demonstrated the proper way of using a fire extinguisher. For this event, the fire extinguishers used were filled with water, and participants were encouraged to perform a return demonstration.

The Knot Tying booth featured the different types of ropes, as well as basic knot tying. Tying a knot is one of the most important skills that everybody should learn. It does not only help in many practical ways, but it can also save lives during emergency.

The "How to Become a Fireman" and Showcasing of BFP booth had three parts. First was an overview on what a firefighter is, the job description, the duties and responsibilities, the qualifications, and the process during absorption. The second  featured the different types of  BFP uniforms,  and the third showcased  the firefighting personal protective equipment.

Partner agencies such as the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the Philippine National Police, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, the Department of Health, and the Sagada Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Office also put up their respective booth featuring their services.

Governor Bonifacio C. Lacwasan Jr., who was represented by George Lumiwes, shared the importance of conducting such an  activity in disseminating information, and enhancing fire safety awareness during the observance of Fire Prevention Month.

Parent Elizabeth Masferre  lauded the BFP for conducting  the fire roadshow, a one-of-a-kind activity especially allowing the students to enhance their knowledge about fire safety awareness, see the different firefighting tools, and engage in the different activities in the booths.(JDP/VJLT-PIA  with reports from BFP-Mt.
