Dugtong Buhay drive nets 139 bags of blood

ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) -- Rubilyn and her aunt Liwayway have successfully donated blood to help others in need.

They were among the 139 individuals who successfully donated blood during the "2024 Dugtong Buhay" bloodletting activity organized by the Capiz Information Center of the Philippine Information Agency and Capiz Association of Government Public Information Officers (CAGPIO) on March 21 at the CityMall Roxas as part of the Women's Month Celebration.

"I really wanted to help because when my child was hospitalized due to dengue, others helped us with our patient's blood needs," said Rubilyn.

It was her second time to donate blood upon learning over a local radio broadcast of the mass bloodletting event.

The Dugtong Buhay, now in its 13th year, is in partnership with the Capiz Police Provincial Office and K5 News FM local station.

Blood donors were composed of students, government employees, private individuals, policemen, firemen, Persons With Disabilities (PWDs), mediamen, and peace and order force multipliers, among others.

"The volume of blood we collected is about 61,650 milliliters which is about 16.2 gallons of blood. That is a big help for our patients needing it," said Philippine Red Cross - Capiz chapter Donor Recruitment Officer Ketch Armiza.

He added that the chapter accommodates an average of 10 patients needing blood transfusions daily.

"Our facility dispenses about 35 blood units every day and, in some cases, accommodates the blood needs of other areas in the country because of our voluntary mass blood donation program," he noted.

The PIA’s life-saving initiative has been a consistent recipient of the “Sandugo Awards” at the provincial and regional levels.

In 2023, the day-long blood donation has facilitated 148 successful blood donors which translates to a collection of about 18 gallons or 72 liters of blood. (AGP/AAL/PIA Capiz)
