Sheep ahoy! Isabela may soon produce canned lamb

CITY OF ILAGAN, Isabela (PIA) -- Aside from intensifying community sheep production, the Department of Agriculture (DA) in Region 2 is introducing alternative business ventures for sheep raisers in Isabela province.

DA Regional Executive Director Rose Mary G. Aquino said, through the Isabela Experiment Station located in Gamu, Isabela, and DA 2’s research division, they will introduce to sheep raisers some possible business ventures in cuisine and culinary, and develop a technology for the production of canned lamb meat.

“We have nucleus farms that have breeders and fattened flocks so all we have to do is to unleash the opportunity for the small ruminants, especially the sheep production and industry,” Aquino said.

Aquino said to ensure the sustainability of the programs for small ruminants in Cagayan Valley, DA also crafted a multi-year plan including mapping and updating the sheep roadmap in the region and profiling farmers and cooperatives that are into small ruminant raising.

To further promote sheep production, Jacqueline Gumiran, head of the Isabela Experiment Station, said Gamu town will stage Sheep Festival and Expo, while the agriculture department and its partner agencies and organizations will conduct a sheep summit, investment fora, town hall meetings, product development, and market matching.

“The most important product we get from sheep is meat. Meat is an important component of our diets. The lamb and mutton supply us with many of the vital vitamins and proteins we need for healthy living,” Gumiran said.

For culinary and cuisine, Gumiran also said they have identified mutton biryani, braised lamb, lamb curry, roasts, lamb chops, grilled lamb, and rack of lamb as among the recipes that can be showcased out of lamb and mutton meats.

“There are various health benefits from sheep meat. The mutton meat is a nutritious gold mine, including zinc for a robust immune system, the B12 vitamin for nerve function, and iron for healthy blood. It is especially abundant in iron, which is essential for preserving normal blood hemoglobin levels,” she added.

Gumiran is optimistic that sheep production in the province will not only provide opportunities for sheep raises but also bring a new industry to the region that will aid in economic growth. (MGE / PIA Isabela with reports from DA Region 2)
