Ilocos Norte hotels, homestays urged to step up water safety measures to prevent drowning

LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte (PIA) -- In line with the observance of Drowning Prevention Month, the Department of Tourism (DOT) Ilocos Norte encourages non-accredited accommodation establishments to strengthen their safety measures to prevent drowning incidents in the province.

The tourism department emphasizes the importance of having pool rules, a lifeguard on duty, or at least an employee trained in first aid at these establishments. Pool depths should also be clearly posted to ensure visitors are aware of the risks.

The DOT is taking the initiative to ensure tourists’ safety by conducting regular inspections of hotels and resorts, particularly those with swimming pools.

According to Evangeline M. Dadat, chief operations officer of DOT-Ilocos,  the province has almost 50 DOT-accredited accommodation establishments, majority are located in Pagudpud. She stressed that all tourism stakeholders, including hotels, resorts, and their employees, must prioritize their guests’ safety.

Furthermore, Dadat mentioned that drowning can happen not only on beaches and pools. Incidents can also occur in spas with therapy pools and jacuzzi. She also added that drowning can also occur in homes with drums, bales, and basins, all of which can endanger infants.

Dadat also pointed out the importance of beach safety measures, such as lifeguard stations and visibly set swimming hours. The DOT is dedicated to providing tourism stakeholders with training in first aid, lifeguard training, basic life-saving, and water search and rescue training to ensure they are prepared to prevent accidents and save lives.

The agency also coordinates with the Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Red Cross, and other private organizations like Zambales Life Saving Incorporated to provide stakeholders with training and resources.

She reminded the public regarding the importance of caution and prudence when participating in recreational activities in water-related facilities and to always prioritize safety to avoid any untoward incident.

“I’d like to welcome all our visitors here in our region, the Ilocos Region. Be safe and be smart,” Dadat highlighted. (JCR/MJTAB PIA Ilocos Norte)
