LTFRB, Davao terminals ready for Holy Week exodus

DAVAO CITY (PIA) -- The government transportation agencies in the Davao Region have readied operation plans and safety measures with the expected influx of passengers at bus terminals in line with the observance of the Holy Week.

The Davao City Overland Transport Terminal (DCOTT) is fully prepared to cater to passengers who will be returning to their respective provinces during the Holy Week, said DCOTT manager Aisa Usop.

Aisa Usop, DCOTT manager, ensures strict security protocols and efficient bus and terminal operations during the Holy Week.

Usop said that the passenger influx is expected to begin on Holy Wednesday, March 27, with an estimated 35,000 to 40,000 passengers, and with the need of 700 to 800 buses daily.

Throughout the week, there will be a need of 1,000 to 1,500 buses for the expected 50,000 to 70,000 passengers.

Usop said that they have already coordinated with other offices concerning the readiness of bus operators, and ensure strict and effective monitoring and implementation of the security and operation plans.

She added that there will be limited buses on Maundy Thursday, March 28, with no public bus transportation on Good Friday, March 29.

For smooth transportation and to avoid delays, online booking is encouraged so that the operators and drivers can anticipate the number of passengers per route.

Security personnel conducts inspections upon arrival of passengers at DCOTT Ecoland to ensure safety and security among passengers who wish to go to their respective provinces for the Holy Week.

“First, ang atoang mga bus companies, aware na sila kung asa dapit nga ruta  or destination ang daghan pasahero. So, diha pa lang, maka pangandam na gyud sila ahead of time, and they can request this special permit with LTFRB,” Usop stated.

(First, our bus companies are aware of which route or destination has many passengers. So, with that alone, they could already prepare….)

The DCOTT management strongly reminds the bus drivers to strictly adhere to policies, including the designated loading-unloading spots and no-pick-up along the highways policy, as part of the safety measures within bus terminals and during travels.

Usop urged both the drivers and passengers to prioritize the no-pick-up along the highways protocols, saying “safety first over convenience.”

“Kaning mga pasahero pod nato, naa pod sila’y responsibility, nga dapat dili pod sila mohunong or mopara anang mga areas nga dili dapat,” she said.

(Our passengers also have the responsibility to know where to embark and disembark.)

Meanwhile, the Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) XI has also set its transportation operation plan for the Holy Week, which included the issuance of special permits for additional routes.

Land Transportation Development officer Tessa Alforque-Piansay said they have facilitated the request of bus companies for additional routes due to the expected large number of passengers of the applied routes.

The influx of passengers at Davao City Overland Transport Terminal as of 9:00 AM, March 27, 2024.

The validity of the special permits will be from March 24 up to Easter Sunday on March 31.

Piansay said that intensified monitoring will also be applied, such as the setting up of help desks in terminals for the whole week, in partnership with other agencies. There will be 5-7 people who will be managing per helpdesk.

The personnel of LTFRB XI will be deployed to major bus and van terminals in Davao City, Tagum City and Digos City to conduct actual inspection and ensure the passengers’ safety and comfort.

For complaints and inquiries, Piansay urged the public to contact LTFRB XI through its Facebook page LTFRB Davao Region, or hotline number 0906-4966852, or via email r11@ltfrb.gov.ph. (NCAE/KSLM/ATC/PIA Davao interns)
