Puerto Princesa City students learn value of water conservation

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan (PIA) -- The Puerto Princesa City Water District (PPCWD) encourages early education about water conservation efforts and resource protection among children through the use of a storybook.

Information officer Jenn Rausa said the management gave the book a new storyline after its launch in 2016, which mainly focused on the water cycle. The 2024 version of the book encompasses the plans in water resources protection, gender and development, integrated watershed management, and disaster risk reduction management.

Rausa, co-writer of the storybook entitled ‘Ang Tubig at Ikaw: Eco Warrior Adventure’, believes that teaching children about water conservation should start at home.

“Naniniwala kami na importante na mag start sa bahay habang bata pa sa water conservation efforts para madadala nila hanggang paglaki,” she said.

[We believe that it is important to start at home while they are young in conservation efforts so they can practice until they grow old.]

To encourage involvement among students, the city water district also selected its young water advocates from Puerto Princesa Pilot Elementary School (PPPES). The program aims to train student leaders as advocates for promoting awareness about water conservation and environmental protection.

The advocates will also help the information and education team of PPCWD in disseminating relevant information that aligns with the city water district’s goals, values, mission, and vision.

“Makakasama namin sila sa future activities; halimbawa magkakaroon ng school brigade at magdi-distribute ng books. Ang mga magiging storyteller namin ay mga bata na na-tap namin,” she said.

[They will join us in future activities; for example, we will have a school brigade and the distribution of books. Those children we've tapped will be the storytellers.]

The management is looking to do the campaign, including book distribution in some schools within the city, particularly those within the watershed areas like Barangay Montible. (RG/ PIA MIMAROPA - Palawan)
