DOH empowers youths to fight drugs with ‘TRC, Barkada mo't Kabarangay mo!’ health campaign

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union (PIA) – The Department of Health (DOH) Region 1's Treatment and Rehabilitation Center (TRC) took the fight against drug addiction directly to the youth with a recent health campaign.

Dubbed "TRC, Barkada mo't Kabarangay mo!", the initiative aims to educate and empower young people in San Fernando City and surrounding areas.

The campaign emphasizes preventing drug use before it starts, targeting students and youth leaders most vulnerable during late adolescence and early adulthood.

Over 250 participants, including youth leaders and college students, joined a fun walk to kick off the event.

Dr. Marvin Munar, TRC head, highlighted the importance of a "health-oriented approach" to tackle drug abuse, alcoholism, and smoking at the community, school, and workplace levels.

“Kasi ang thrust po natin ay  upang mapuksa ang addiction at matigil ang substance abuse sa level ng komunidad, sa mga eskwelahan at sa ating mga workplaces,” Dr. Munar said.

(Our goal is to eradicate addiction and stop substance abuse entirely)

He added, “This campaign is not just about raising public health awareness; it's a step towards a stronger, more progressive La Union."

He encouraged the public to join the fight against illegal drugs.

The DOH partnered with the San Fernando City Health Office to provide medical services to participants during the event.

The TRC aims to reach five barangays in the city this year with their services.

“As of now, I can only speak with  Barangay Dalumpinas Oeste since they are our first barangay partner. Since they were given a drug-free certification by the government and we are here to help them sustain its title [drug-free barangay] for a long period; other chosen barangays will be further announced,” said Munar.

This initiative aligns with the mandate of Republic Act 9165, the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
