Baguio activates network of health promotion champions in workplaces

The City Healt Services Office personnel conduct a consultation and planning meeting with health promotion champions in workplaces in Baguio City.

BAGUIO CITY (PIA) – The Baguio City Health Services Office (CHSO) has started a network of health promotion champions in workplaces (Hepows) in the city towards a healthy and more productive workforce.

The CHSO recently convened occupational safety and health officers, and health focal persons of medium and large establishments, and government agencies in the city to present CHSO programs and services, learn from the best practices on health and health promotion of the different offices, and explore areas of collaboration on health promotion.

Acting City Health Officer Dr. Celia Flor Brillantes said focusing on healthy workplaces is among the implementation approaches for the Health Promotion Framework Strategy 2030 that aims to have a “Healthy Pilipinas wherein health-seeking individuals, health-enabling settings, and health-supporting governance are present, and achieving optimum health is possible.”

“Through this initiative, we aim to extend our arms in health promotion in the workplaces through the OSH officers and health focal persons. The city government cannot do it alone, that’s why we need to collaborate with the various sectors,” Brillantes said.

With the help of Hepows, health awareness in the workplace will increase. Hepows may not be health professionals, but they can be health champions who will help in advocating healthier workplaces in the city, she said.

“Increase awareness among your ranks, increase access, increase linkage within us. Now that we have the HEPO network in the workplace, we hope we will work together,” she added.

The CHSO hopes for more collaborative efforts in the future as it invites other industries not yet included in the network to participate.

Among the establishments that have responded are colleges and universities, hotels, shopping centers and malls, business outsourcing companies,  cooperatives, utilities, and others.

With health  attributed to a myriad of factors, the support of all relevant stakeholders is crucial in helping Baguio constituents live healthier, longer, and happier lives, Brillantes said. (JDP/DEG-PIA CAR)
