DANGLAS, Abra(PIA) -- The local government unit (LGU) of Danglas has now its own municipal sanitary landfill, the first ever established landfill in the province of Abra.
The Provincial Environmental Management Unit (PEMU)-Abra and the local officials of Danglas led the blessing and inauguration of the facility on March 7, 2024.
This project with total fund of P5.5 million was initiated through the leadership of Mayor Esther Bernos. This will establish a systematic solid waste management in the municipality for the protection and conservation of the environment.
The sanitary landfill located at Barangay Caupasan, Danglas is equipped with a total of 1,000 cubic meter capacity. The LGU plans to expand its total capacity to 2,000 cubic meters in the future.
In an interview with Danglas LGU Environment Management Specialist II Norriel Montejo, he said that with the landfill, they are now collecting residual wastes twice a month.
“Dati, quarterly, ngayon twice a month na and we have clustered the barangays already, northern and southern clusters, with corresponding schedule,” he said.
DENR-Abra Environment Management Bureau Engr. Joyce Ann Mangsat underscored the importance of the landfill as she reiterated the need for waste segregation among the residents in the households and in establishments.
“Mas convenient tattan para kadagiti barangay ken ti LGU ta saandan nga aggasto ti transportation costs kadagiti basura da nga mapan jay landfill jay Tarlac. However, they still need to practice proper segregation ti waste,” Mangsat emphasized.
[It is more convenient for the barangays and LGUs now because they will not spend transportation cost to bring their wastes to Capas, Tarlac. However, they still need to practice proper waste segregation.]
She recomended that the LGU can procure bailing machine press to compact the waste into regularly shaped blocks, which take up less space, and maximize the capacity of the landfill. (JDP/CAGT – PIA CAR, Abra)
