Call for nominations for the Order of National Artists goes regional

NEGROS OCCIDENTAL (PIA6) -- The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) will reach out to the regions to call for nominations for the Order of National Artists (ONA).

The NCCA and CCP announced that the deadline for the submission of nominations is June 30, 2024.

“We are here to send a strong message that artistic excellence knows no geographical boundaries and our culture thrives in every cluster of our nation.  We recognize the invaluable contributions of artists in the Visayas whose talents and creativity enriched the Philippine arts, namely: music, dance, theatre, visual arts, film and broadcast arts, literature, architecture, and allied arts and design,” Casaysay said.

National Artist Ramon Muzones for Literature known for his Hiligaynon Literature, Leandro Locsin for Architecture who designed the Cultural Center of the Philippines and four other adjacent buildings - Folk Arts Theater, Philippine International Convention Center, Philcite, and The Westin Hotel (now Sofitel Philippine Plaza),Davao-based but has roots in Negros Occidental Agnes Locsin for Dance known for her Neo-Ethnic style, National Artist for Theater Daisy H. Avellana, and National Artist for Visual Arts J. Elizalde Navarro for Visual Arts, were among others, conferred the Order of National Artist hailing from Western Visayas.

CCP Vice President and Artistic Director Dennis Marasigan enumerated the honors and privileges of national artists. He said a national artist will be given a gold-plated medallion minted by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas; a lifetime emolument and materials; physical benefits such as cash awards of a minimum of P250,000; a lifetime personal stipend of P50,000 per month; medical and hospitalization benefits; coverage of a life insurance policy by the Government Service Insurance System; and a fully-subsidized state funeral.

The Order of the National Artist title shall be given to artists who have met the following criteria: living artists who are Filipino citizens at the time of nomination and awarding, as well as those who died after the establishment of the award in 1972 but were Filipino citizens at the time of their death;

Artists, who through the content and form of their works have contributed to building a Filipino sense of nationhood; artists who have pioneered a mode of creative expression or style, thus, earning distinction and making an impact on succeeding generations of artists; artists who have created a substantial and significant body of works and/ or consistently displayed excellence in the practice of their artform, thus, enriching artistic expression or style; and artists who enjoy broad acceptance through prestigious national and/or international recognition such as the Gawad CCP para sa Sining, CCP Thirteen Artists Awards and the NCCA Haraya Awards (Alab ng Dangal), critical acclaim and/or reviews of their works, and respect and esteem from peers.

The NCCA and the CCP jointly administer the nomination process, which is eventually conferred by the President of the Philippines. The ONA is the highest national recognition given to Filipino individuals who have made significant contributions to the cultural heritage of the country, and it seeks to honor those who have dedicated their lives to their works, which have forged new paths and directions for future generations of Filipino artists.

Nominations for the ONA may be submitted by government and non-government cultural organizations and educational institutions, as well as private foundations and councils.

"I call on you for nominations.  Your perceptions and insights are indispensable in recognizing, celebrating, and amplifying the pivotal role of arts and artists in our journey to social emancipation,” Casaysay said.
