CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro (PIA) -- A collective effort by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), the National Irrigation Administration (NIA), and the Provincial Government of Marinduque has initiated the employment of 802 El Niño stricken farmers in the province.

This move is part of the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) program, designed to provide temporary relief through employment in essential public works.

The El Niño phenomenon, known for its devastating dry spells, has significantly hampered agricultural productivity across Marinduque, putting the livelihoods of hundreds of farmers at risk.

Recognizing the urgent need for intervention, the TUPAD program engaged the farmers in clearing and maintenance activities of irrigation systems over a period of 15 days.

This initiative not only aims to provide immediate financial aid but also to enhance the resilience of agricultural infrastructure against future climatic adversities.

Before commencing the actual work, TUPAD focal person Maria Cielo Orilla and TUPAD coordinators facilitated the simultaneous orientation and contract signing for farmers in the municipalities of Boac, Gasan, Mogpog, Buenavista, Sta. Cruz, and Torrijos.

Each of the program beneficiaries will receive a compensation of P5,925, or P395 per day, aligning with the prevailing minimum wage standards of the region.

The payment will be facilitated through remittance partners, ensuring a smooth and accessible process for the farmers. (JJGS/PIA MIMAROPA)
