MANILA, (PIA) -- The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. emphasized the importance of gender equality in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a roadmap for a more just and sustainable world.

"Gender equality is crucial for achieving peaceful societies with full human potential and sustainable development," Solidum said, reiterating DOST's commitment to providing women with equal opportunities for participation in education, government, and leadership roles.

He, however, acknowledged the ongoing challenge of achieving full gender equality.

Solidum cited the 2023 Global Gender Gap Report, which revealed that no country has yet achieved full gender parity. "This report serves as a reminder that we need to do more to strengthen our initiatives for women's empowerment."

The science and technology agency kicked off its celebration of National Women's Month on March 1, 2024, with a call for continued progress towards gender equality.

The theme for this year's celebration, "Lipunang Patas sa Bagong Pilipinas: Kakayahan ng Kababaihan, Patutunayan!" (A Just Society in the New Philippines: Let Us Prove the Capabilities of Women!), emphasized the agency's commitment to empowering women and transforming their roles in society.

DOST Assistant Secretary and DOST-wide GAD Focal Person Diane L. Ignacio underscored the importance of creating a safe and inclusive workplace for women within the department. "Celebrating Women's Month is a symbolic recognition of the invaluable contributions Filipino women make, despite facing societal challenges," said Assistant Secretary Ignacio. "This celebration is just one of many ways DOST promotes gender and development; empowering women in all aspects of life is a core value for us."

The kick-off activity featured a parade, an opening program showcasing DOST agencies' initiatives, and the turnover of new furniture for the DOST Day Care Center. Throughout the day, employees enjoyed a mini bazaar, traditional Filipino games, wellness activities, legal aid services, and live entertainment. DOST Lakambinis, young female leaders within the department, proudly wore attire made from Philippine fabrics developed and produced by the DOST-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI).

DOST's National Women's Month celebration served as a springboard for continued progress towards gender equality. The department remains dedicated to fostering a culture of inclusion, empowering women to reach their full potential, and contributing to a brighter future for all Filipinos. (PIA-NCR)
