Northern Mindanao's RDRRMC tests readiness in nationwide earthquake drill

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA)--To assess people's preparedness, evacuation procedures, and emergency responders' rescue skills in case of an earthquake, the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) and Office of Civil Defense (OCD) recently led the first quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) at Carmen National High School, Cagayan de Oro City.

"The unpredictable nature of earthquakes underscores the importance of preparedness. Knowing how to respond enhances safety," said Regional Director Antonio Sugarol of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) in Northern Mindanao.

Given the presence of 18 fault lines capable of bringing in earthquakes ranging from magnitude 5.8 to 7.0, he emphasized the importance of being constantly prepared to deal with disasters or hazards.

“We must continue preparing for the 'big one,' regardless of its occurrence. Preparation is essential to respond effectively and protect the public," Sugarol said.

He explained that the simultaneous drill evaluates the efficiency of preparedness, response, and recovery plans developed by local government units, offices, and schools, both private and public.

The Department of Education-Cagayan de Oro City Division thanked RDRRMC-10 for selecting Carmen National High School as the NSED site, noting that the activity will help students and the school improve earthquake response and assess preparedness.

"Being prepared and knowing how to respond to earthquakes can save lives. We deeply appreciate the OCD and the RDRRMC for including Carmen National High School in the NSED. It allows students to learn safety protocols and evacuation techniques," said DepEd CdeO Schools Division Supervisor Roy Angelo Gazo.

The NSED goes beyond testing the efficiency of contingency plans for LGUs and schools. It evaluates coordination, communication, and command mechanisms during response operations.

"The RDRRMC hopes that this activity will promote a culture of disaster resilience in communities," Sugarol said. (JAKA/PIA 10)
