DOH cautions public on heatstroke risk amid soaring temperatures

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union (PIA) – The Department of Health (DOH) in Region 1 urges residents to be cautious of heatstroke as the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) forecasts scorching temperatures exceeding 41 degrees Celsius.

PAGASA classifies heat index readings between 33 and 41 degrees Celsius as "extreme caution," while those exceeding 42 degrees Celsius fall under the "danger" category.

DOH-Region 1 Director Paula Paz Sydiongco advises everyone to limit outdoor exposure during peak sun hours to prevent heat-related illnesses and heatstroke.

“Pinapayuhan po ang lahat na huwag ng lumabas ng bahay mula 10AM hanggang 4PM upang makaiwas sa sobrang init ng panahon,” said Sydiongco.

(We recommend staying indoors from 10AM to 4PM to avoid the scorching heat.)

Prolonged sun exposure can lead to sunburn, heat cramps, dehydration, heat exhaustion, and even fainting.

Sydiongco emphasizes the importance of staying hydrated and avoiding the midday sun.

"Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated," she advised.

"If you must go outdoors, wear light-colored, loose clothing that reflects heat.  An umbrella, hat, and sunscreen are also essential, along with bringing water," she added.

PAGASA recorded heat indices as high as 46 degrees Celsius in La Union on April 1, with Dagupan City reaching 45 degrees Celsius and Ilocos Norte and Sur reaching 41 degrees Celsius.

The heat index reflects how hot it actually feels to the human body, considering both temperature and humidity.

"For those planning beach trips, exercise extreme caution. These scorching temperatures are expected to persist throughout the summer," Sydiongco warned.

Sydiongco encourages residents to follow PAGASA's temperature updates and take preventive measures to avoid heat-related illnesses. (JCR/AMB/PIA Region 1)
