DPWH completes replacement of ‘Maring’-damaged bridge in Ilocos Sur

VIGAN CITY, Ilocos Sur (PIA) - - The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in the Ilocos Region completed the replacement of the old Bayugao bridge along Manila North Road in Santa Cruz, Ilocos Sur, which was damaged by Severe Tropical Storm ‘Maring’ in Oct. 2021.

“The completion of the replacement of the weak bridge marks a significant milestone for the community, ensuring the safety and convenience of both residents and travelers in the area,” the DPWH stated in a press release on April 1.

The DPWH was in charge of doing the earthworks, bridge construction, drainage and slope protection structures, and flood control for the bridge.

“The completion of this project is a success for both the local and national governments. It is also beneficial for the transportation and business sectors. With the new infrastructure in place, it is now faster and easier to transport products compared to when the bridge was under rehabilitation,” said Santa Cruz Mayor Teresita Valle in an interview on April 3.

It can be remembered that during its rehabilitation, heavy traffic and congestion occurred causing delays and inconvenience.

The DPWH Ilocos Sur Second District Engineering Office's maintenance personnel and the Equipment Management Division of the DPWH regional office then installed a Bailey bridge, which served as a temporary bridge.

This allowed the smooth transportation of people, goods, and services without any hindrances.

The replacement bridge is two times wider than the old bridge and reduces travel time for motorists by 15 minutes.

The DPWH also constructed a flood control structure for the replacement bridge to protect nearby resources and houses from the rising river current.

“This is a clear indication that the national government is highly capable of implementing and completing projects that benefit the communities. It should serve as an inspiration to the Filipino people to continue supporting government projects that aim to boost the infrastructure sector of the country and its economy,” Valle added.

Overall, the project is a testament to the government's commitment to improving the transportation infrastructure throughout the region. (JCR/AMB/JMCQ, PIA Ilocos Sur)
