PVAO underscores significance of Philippine Veterans Week, Araw ng Kagitingan

BAGUIO CITY (PIA) -- The Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) urges the public, especially the youth, to pay tribute to the veterans during the celebration of Philippine Veterans Week from April 5-11, and the commemoration of the 82nd Day of Valor  or Araw ng Kagitingan on April 9.

PVAO Field Service Office-Cordillera head Cherrylyn Sabling said while the public is enjoying the holidays during these special occasions, it is important for them to know the historical significance of these days, especially the sacrifices made by the veterans during World War II, including the post-war veterans, or those who rendered honorable military service in defending the country in times of war or peace.

"Through the commemoration activities ket ma-inspire po natin especially our youths to put into action daytoy makunkuna nga love of country," she said.

This year's commemoration carries the theme, "Pagpaparangal sa Kagitingan ng mga Beterano: Saligan ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino", which aims to emphasize the importance of honoring the bravery and sacrifices of our veterans in today's society.

Various local government units, in coordination with the PVAO and the Veteran's Federation of the Philippines, will hold a replication of Araw ng Kagitingan activities in Mountain Province and Itogon, Benguet on April 9, and in Baguio City on April 12. The municipality of Sablan in Benguet will also celebrate its Liberation Day on April 11.

By virtue of Executive Order No. 203, Series of 1987, April 9 of every year  is declared Araw ng Kagitingan, and is a regular holiday. Meanwhile, Proclamation No. 466 issued in 1989 declared the period of April 5 to 11 as the Philippine Veterans Week to promote, preserve, and memorialize the principles, ideals, and deeds of our war veterans as a means to enhance patriotism especially among the youth.
