Ilocos Sur honors veterans, calls for everyday heroism on Araw ng Kagitingan

VIGAN CITY, Ilocos Sur (PIA) – The Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) and the Ilocos Sur provincial government joined forces to commemorate the 82nd Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) on Tuesday, April 9.

The ceremony, held at the Provincial Farmers Livelihood Development Center, began with a floral offering at the monument of former President Elpidio Quirino at Plaza Salcedo here.

This year's theme, "Pagpaparangal sa Kagitingan ng mga Beterano: Saligan ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino", emphasized remembering the sacrifices of Filipino veterans who secured the country's freedom.

Victoria Antiporda, PVAO Veterans Affairs Officer II, explained the theme aims to strengthen Filipinos' collective pride and instill patriotism in the youth, preparing them to be future defenders.

Governor Jeremias Singson, in his message delivered by Provincial Administrator Marlon Tagorda, highlighted the enduring value of heroism.

“This is a reminder for all of us to stand up and rise as one against the adversities the Filipino nation continues to battle with. We can be heroes as well by offering ourselves for the service of others,” he said.

He emphasized that while the "Araw ng Kagitingan" commemorates past sacrifices, Filipinos can embody heroism today by serving others.

"This is a call for every one of us, as ordinary citizens, to contribute extraordinary accomplishments to the nation," Governor Singson stated.

Col. Constante Pante (Ret.), vice president of the Ilocos Sur First District Veterans Federation, expressed his appreciation to the PVAO and the provincial government for honoring veterans.

He emphasized the importance of remembering their valor and uniting to face current challenges.

“We should always remember the valor of our Filipino veterans and get inspired to keep us united amidst the problems being confronted by the whole world. On our own soil, we are confronted with the issues of the West Philippine Sea and the various threats to our national security, the prices of goods and services, and many more concerns that tend to test our determination for national survival,” Col. Pante said.

He added, "We should be united and stand together to face these challenges so that the bloodshed of our heroes will not go in vain. Most of our World War II veterans are now gone but their sacrifices, courage, and bravery will never be forgotten."

Around 150 veterans, out of the total 1,300 veterans and surviving spouses in the province, attended the commemoration.
